Yorke George Jander, Jr., 86, of Franklin, NC passed away on December 7, 2013. He was born in New York, NY, the son of the late Yorke George Jander, Sr. and Eleanor Nestrock Jander. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant children, Hope Daniel and Yorke T. Jander. Yorke is survived by his wife Diana Pappagallo Jander, of 39 years, daughter Leslie Jackimowicz and husband Ed of Fort Myers, Florida, three sons, Peter Jander and wife Maryann of Bloomingberg, N.Y, Kurt Jander of Franklin, N.C, and Yorke Thomas Jander and wife Megan, of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren, Kyle, Corbin, Ryan and Eryn, one great-grandchild, Gunner, and a sister, Coral Brown of Northern Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. Yorke was originally from Hastings on the Hudson, New York and graduated from Pratt Institute of Technology. He was a H.V.A.C design engineer by trade, and designed the H.V.A.C system for Saint Patricks Cathedral in New York City, among many other projects in the New York area. He came to Franklin, NC in 1974 and was employed at Western Carolina University in the physical plant. He retired from Western Carolina University in 1989 and was the owner of Smokey Mountain Mechanical. He and his wife Diana, were the owners of Pappagallo restaurant in Franklin, NC. Yorke was a simple quiet man, who loved his wife and family. He loved his home, his books, and his vast collection of jazz and classical music. He loved to make wine and share it with family and friends. He was known for always lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He loved animals, and is missed by his two little dogs, Max and Yoda, and his "grand-dog", Louie. At his request, there will be no services at this time, but the family is planning a memorial at a later date to celebrate his life. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Trimont Christian Academy Scholarship Fund, 98 Promise Lane, Franklin, NC, where his adopted granddaughter, Kailey, attends school.
