Obituary

Willard Furman Gibson, age 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2019 after a period of declining health.

He was the son of Willa Mae Gibson Messer and the grandson of Will and Maggie Gibson. In addition to his mother and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather Fred Messer, a son Ricky Gibson, and a brother John Messer.

Willard is survived by the love of his life, Barbara Raby and her children Julie Raby and Ryan Raby (Amber); son, Danny Gibson; brothers, Dennis Messer (Sarah) and Jerry Griffith (Charlee); sisters Linda Thibault, Fredia Bell and Beverly Campbell (David): grandchildren, Sarah Gibson, Jackson Perone, Cooper Perone, Reed Raby and Ella Raby. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He worked in his younger years at a Cowee Valley gem mine where he learned about and shared his knowledge on the native gemstones of Macon County. Then he was for many years employed by Hayes Corporation as a dredge and sand classifying plant operator. Prior to his retirement he worked for Andy Berry and Sons Well Drilling.

Willard for over 40 years was a well respected figure in youth athletic programs in Macon County. He was a coach, an official and an avid spectator. Whether in the forefront or in the background it was all about the kids, a teacher, a mentor, a friend, in the game and away from the game.

He was also a history enthusiast who learned at a very young age he could go and be anywhere he wanted by reading about the places and events that shaped not only our nation but the entire world. In the springtime, Willard couldn't wait to get out and search for and identify those tiny little wildflowers that first came alive from the winter. He spent many hours enjoying the beauties of nature.

Funeral Service will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 18, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Dennis Messer, Rev. Davis Hooper and Rev. Greg Rogers will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Andy Berry, Roy Jones, Paul Shuler, Mark Berry, Glenn Fitzgerald, Roger Tenney and Ken Fromknecht.

Memorial donations can be made to the Youth Sports League of your choice.
