Shirley Elizabeth Riley, 88, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 30 at Macon Funeral Home, followed by a burial service at Woodlawn Cemetery. An additional memorial service will be held April 27 on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Born in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late William Rubin and Florence Jordan Rubin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Samuel Riley. Shirley had two brothers, William and Ronnie.
She is survived by a son, John Scott Riley (Becky); daughters, Lynn Ann Moffitt (Randy) and Sharron Elizabeth Riley (Mike); grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Hunter and Jonathan.
Nicknamed "Oma" by grandson Michael when he was a small child, Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandma. She is remembered by all as a constant presence growing up and into adulthood. For example, Oma and Grandpa took Michael and Robert over summers and other school breaks. Later, she took her adult daughter, Sharron, to the hotel in Colorado where she worked when Sharron was an infant. She was also very involved with grandchildren Hunter and Jonathan from the time they were born, never without a smile or a game of "Go Fish."
Strong in her Christian faith, Shirley also enjoyed serving others. She was ever-present in the kitchen for family holidays, but also extended that into a career in the dining room at Sky Valley Resort. After retirement, she continued food service at volunteer functions such as overseeing the food preparation at numerous sporting events organized by her daughter, Lynn.
Oma loved to travel. Her son, John, recalls Mom at family camping trips as some of his earliest memories. Later, he spent summers camping with Mom and Dad at Standing Indian, and attributes the joy on these extended trips to his love of camping and the outdoors now. Before his illness, she enjoyed a six month trip to Alaska with her husband "Buddy." Their shared memories of this trip were often hilarious. Shirley also got to take several cruises with her daughters and friends as well.
