Samuel "Sam" George Tallent of Greenville, SC, 67, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011.
Born in Macon Co, he was the son of the late Ralph E. and Kate Raby-Tallent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Tallent; sisters, Dorothy Clampitt and Kathryn Cook; very special mother and father-in-law, Perry and Lola Shepherd and brother-in-law, John Shepherd. Those who knew him best will fondly recall the days "Papa" spent hunting and hosting cookouts with his band of friends affectionately known as "Sam's Hunt Club". He was a very dedicated truck driver, which was dually noted by former employers Colonial Group Incorporated when they presented him with the 1995 Million Mile Safe Driving Award. He was proud to serve his country as a member of the US Army National Guard and had previously served in Army National Guard Reserve. He was a lifelong member of Burningtown Baptist Church.
Sam is survived by his loving wife, Betty Shepherd Tallent of Greenville; a son, Samuel "Sammy" Tallent Jr. of Woodruff, SC; many adored grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Queen (Bill) of Franklin, Sarah Henry of Mauldin, SC and June Carpenter (Doug) of Marion, NC, along with one brother, Don Tallent (Denise) of Laurens, SC and a host of close family and friends.
A Celebration of his life is planned for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Reverends Doug Carpenter, Wesley Hooper, Andy Cloer, Steve Reeves and Dennis Messer will officiate. Burial will follow in the Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery with full military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Queen, Johnny Rice, Mike Shepherd, Ken Shepherd Jr., Tony Henry, Matthew Deese, Patrick Tallent and Fred Tallent Jr.
David Yonce, Ryan Kay, Stanley Hammond, Connie Robinson, Eddie Murphy, Ryan Robinson, Mark Brannon and Nat Henry will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
Memorial donations can be made to Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
