Samuel Paul Tallent, age 88, a Macon County native, died February 12, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born February 27, 1923, to the late Ell and Nettie Reese Tallent of Macon County. Sam was a member of the "Greatest Generation", having served in World War II Campaigns in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received during his tour of duty. Sam retired from Bythe Industtires of Charlotte, NC. During his retirement, he enjoyed working in his yard, bird watching, caring for his pets, Charlie, Tinkerbell and Pepper and reading his Western Novels. He was a member of Norman West Sunday School class at First Baptist Church and a member of Franklin VFW Post 7339. Sam was preceded in death by sisters, Annabell Strothers, Louise Paul, Katie Southards, Mary Fouts; brothers, Ralph, Bob and Ray Tallent.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Anne Huggins Tallent, sons, Sam (Janey) of Douglasville, Ga., Doug (Martha) of Asheville, Jerry (Beth) of Franklin, daughters, Linda Ownbey of Candler and Debbie Tallent of Charlotte. He was lovingly known as "Papaw" by his six grandchildren; Lisa Whitaker (Tim) of Fairview, Matthew Tallent (Jean) of Franklin, Josh and Joseph Tallent of Asheville, Laura and Paul Tallent of Franklin. Sam is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Jacob Whitaker of Fairview and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 15th in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Dusek and Dr. Robert Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Josh Tallent, Joseph Tallent, Paul Tallent, Matthew Tallent, Jacob Whitaker and Trent Fouts. The Norman West Sunday School class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
