Obituary

Robert Jackson "Jack" Angel, 80, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Grandview Manor, Franklin, NC, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Franklin on March 20, 1926, he was the son of the late Zebulon Grady and Ada Lucille McCollum Angel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Evelyn Dance and a nephew, James Randolph Dance, Jr. After graduating from Franklin High School he enrolled at Western Carolina Teachers College, (WCU) and was drafted into the Army on this 18th birthday. After completing training at Fort Bragg, NC, North Camp Fort Hood, Texas and Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, he was deployed to Saipan Island where he served until he returned to the United States. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1946. Jack returned to Western Carolina where he completed a B.S. in Science. He continued in college until he finished his M.A. in Science and Education. He taught Science at Franklin High School for eight years and worked during the summers as assistant manager of Highlands Country Club. His uncle, Dr. Edgar Angel, recruited him to become Administrator at Angel Hospital. Jack continued in this position until the death of his uncle. He then worked for Angel Hospital in the Business Department. Jack was affiliated with Angel Hospital for 38 years. Jack was an Eagle Scout, and a member of the First United Methodist Church for 72 years. He was a member of the Macon County Historical Society, the VFW Post 7339 and former member of the Franklin Lions Club. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, Cooking and helping Senior Citizens.

He is survived by two brothers, Richard C. Angel of Walland, Tenn., Dan Angel and his wife, Sandra of Toccoa, GA; one sister, Ruth Angel of Gastonia, NC; brother-in-law, James Randolph Dance of Knoxville, Tenn.; two nephews, Robert Bruce Dance of Little River, NC and Jeffrey Scott Angel of Atlanta, GA; one niece, Melanie Lynn Angel of Toccoa, GA and several cousins most of whom reside in Franklin.

Private graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Woodlawn Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 27, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Vic Greene will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at Macon Funeral Home.
