Pauline Bates Martin, 87, of Long Beach, CA, formerly of Franklin, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013.
Born in Macon County on August 18, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Napoleon and Mary Angie Shook Bates. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson; a great granddaughter and her ten brothers and sisters, Ida Tallent, Boyd Bates, Barnette Bates, Dock Bates, Grady Bates and Grace Stamey (twins), Dollie Cowart, Gordia Smiley and Gordon Bates (twins), and Omie Bell. Pauline was the last surviving sibling.
She is survived by five children, Eugene Sanders of Gastonia, NC, Wayne Sanders of Westminster, CA, Paulette Haynes of Heath Springs, SC, Ken Grant Sr. of Bellflower, CA and Sandy Grant Martinez of Long Beach, CA; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews and many extended family members and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9th, at Beech Avenue Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 8th, at Ward Funeral Service in Gastonia, NC.
