Mary Opal Browning of Harrison Avenue, Franklin, NC died on Saturday, June 12, 2010.
She was born in Swain County, NC to Robert Vincent Jones and Beulah Loftis Jones. She spent her early years in Swain County and was educated at Swain County High School. After her marriage to Charles L. Browning, she was employed by and a student at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee. She chose a career with the US Civil Service. She was employed with the US Navy Department, Washington, DC and the National Climatic Center, Department of Commerce, Asheville, NC. Her last 14 years were spent as a Claims Representative with the Social Security Administration in Franklin, NC. During her 30-year career with the Federal Government, she was the recipient of numerous outstanding performance and quality work awards.
While living in Franklin, she was active for many years in professional organizations, including Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a former BPW President and was selected as BPW Club Woman of the year.
She was preceded by her husband Charles L. Browning of Franklin, who died February 6, 2007; Father, Vincent Jones and Mother, Beulah Loftis Jones of Whittier, NC; one brother, Thomas J. Woods of Etowah, NC and sister, Lee Ann Jones Whitehair of Oklahoma City, OK.
She is survived by her brothers, James T. Woods of Stuckey, SC, Carroll D. Woods of East Flat Rock, NC, Michael Bryson of Cherokee, NC and Robert Jones of Boise, ID.
Private Burial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 19 at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, where she will be placed by her husband. Dr. Jim Dusek will officiate.
