Rev. Marvin Blaine Bachtel, 86, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, July 31st,2018
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Veronica Sebeck Bachtel, of Franklin: four children, Bill Bachtel (Pam), of Fayetteville, NC, Becky Bachtel, of Tallahassee, FL, Denise Brown (Tim) of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Daniel Nelson (Carolyn), of Monroe, NC; brother, Bob Bachtel (Beth), of Tallmadge, OH; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Akron, OH, he was the son of the late Roland and Arlene Bachtel. In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by son, David Nelson and daughter, Debbie Middleton. He served in ROTC in high school and college and entered the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1954. He proudly served with many advances including crew commander in the missile program. After 14 years and traveling around the world, he retired from the Air Force after reaching the rank of Major and began working as a civil servant for the Navy. Later he transferred to the Army Reserves to complete 27½ years of military and government service. Upon finishing his military career, he entered church ministry after graduating from Duke University Seminary. He pastored several churches in Florida and Macon County NC. His church ministry was the highlight and the most fulfilling of his many careers as it allowed him to best use the gifts God had given him to serve and help others. He volunteered in the community providing respite care for Hospice and served on the Hospice board. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school, and played the violin and sang in the choir. He enjoyed camping and restoring antique cars and vintage bicycles, but what he loved most was talking with people. He always had a smile on his face and was quick with a joke. He never met a stranger.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 pm, Sunday August 5,2018 at Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Evan Hill will officiate. Military honors will be conducted.
Memorial donations can be made to the mission fund at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4668 Old Murphy Road, Franklin, NC 28734
