Obituary

Lolita A. Dean, 103 of Burningtown Road, passed away June 13, 2006 at her home.

She was born November 15, 1902, to the late John H. and Candis McCoy Dean. She lived all of her life in the Burningtown Community. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph J. Dean who died in 2001 and a nephew, Steve Dean who died in 1995. Two brothers died as infants. She began teaching school in 1919. Her first school was at Horse Cove, near Highlands. She taught at many of the one room schools in the area including Oak Dale, Tellico, Rose Creek, Burningtown, and Iotla. She taught for many years in the Nantahala schools and also a number of school sessions in Johnston County, NC. She received her education at Western Carolina University, earning a Bachelors Degree in 1950 and a Masters Degree in 1953. She taught Special Education classes at Franklin High School before retiring in 1969 after 50 years in the classroom. Her love of teaching children was a strong belief in education and was equaled by her love of her home on Burningtown Creek and her many friends and neighbors. She had a special love for the great variety of animals she kept on the farm over the years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Burningtown Baptist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Annie Ruth Cabe and husband, Arthur of Franklin; two brothers, Dale Dean and Eugene Dean and wife, Elizabeth; several nieces, nephews; and two special friends, Kay Brezeale and Imogene Davis who gave her devoted and loving care.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 16 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Don Bates and Rev. Judson Hall will officiate. Burial will be in the McCoy Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Wayne McHan, D. L. Huggins, Richard Davis, Dale Welch, Johnathan Dean, and Jerry Cabe.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the retired school teachers association.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, C/O Claudette Dillard, 132 Luther Raby Road, Franklin, NC 28734.
