Harry Chase Babb, 75, of Cullowhee, NC, passed away after a lengthy illness Saturday, February 4, 2006.
Born March 6, 1930 in Knoxville, TN, he was the son of the late Charles Homer Babb, Sr. and Mary Leta Blackburn Babb. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Aubrey Alan Babb and son, Robert Lynn Babb and a brother, Charles H. Babb.
Harry was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was an instructor in analog/digital computers and Link trainers at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois from 1954 through 1958. After leaving the Air Force he became employed with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and was a recipient of the Million Dollar Round Table in his first year with MET. He was named the manager of the Miami Shores district and earned many other sales awards such as the President's Club/Million Dollar Round Table throughout his career with MET through 1969.
In 1968 he moved his family to their current home place near Cashiers, NC, was an agent for N.C. Farm Bureau briefly before being asked to serve as the Branch Manager of the new Wachovia Bank in Cashiers, NC, by the late Hugh Gentry of Cashiers. In 1973 he started his own Independent Insurance Agency in Cashiers, NC. His children came along to work with him in the agency as times passed. In 1998 he was awarded a 25 year service award with Waddell-Sluder and Adams, the general agency of the Zurich U.S. Insurance Group. Harry was instrumental in the formation of the Cashiers Annual Christmas Parade, the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, which he served as it's first president in 1982. He served as the PTO President at Blue Ridge School, Fundraiser for the new Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, and was active in community affairs. In 2002 he and his wife sold CIA, Inc. to his surviving children and retired.
He never met a stranger, made many dear friends, had a great sense of humor and could tell stories until you had to get home for fear of being in trouble with your significant other! He'll have no need to tell any of his stories to gain passage to Heaven. His friends and family will sorely miss him.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jorita Rosalie Porter Babb; son, Michael D. Babb; two daughters, Deborah B. Hicks and husband, Ralph Wally Hicks and Carla B. Tucker
and husband Chris Tucker all of Cashiers, NC; six grandchildren, Frank Chase Babb, Jeremy Daniel Babb, Kayla Renee Babb, Wesley Alan Babb, Benjamin B. Wynn and Christopher N. Tucker; four great grandchildren,; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 11, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Johnny Norris and Rev. Everett Wilson will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad, the Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice.
