Obituary

Grace Lee Allen Patton, age 94, passed away on March 10, 2013 at Manor Care of Palm Harbor in Palm Harbor, Florida.

A native of Snow Camp, North Carolina, Grace was the daughter of George L. and Olive Stuart Allen. She attended Guilford College and UNC-Greensboro before completing her degree in home economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Later, working as a home demonstration agent in Graham, NC, she met James D. Patton from Franklin, NC, and they married in 1942. His Air Force career took them around the world in the next twenty-two years, during which time they raised five children. After Jim's retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the government in the Pentagon and as an independent contractor with NATO in Brussels, Belgium. They retired to his native Franklin until his death in 1978. Grace then moved to Atlanta, but still spent many summers at her cottage in Franklin, often hosting various children and grandchildren. In later years she traveled to China, Italy, Costa Rica, and made many trips to her far-flung family and friends around the United States. She volunteered at the Carter Center for twenty years.

Grace is survived by her children: Susan and husband Robert Woodrow of Austin, Texas; Sarah and husband Chuck Mills of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Barbara, and Dave Baloun of Denver, Colorado; Jim and wife Elisa Diehl of Asheville, NC; Rebecca of Crystal Beach, Florida; also by her grandchildren Peter, Nick, Katherine and Elizabeth Grace, and great-grandchildren Lucy, Hayden, Grayson, and Caroline Grace; and by her sister Marge Parvin and husband Dick of Clearwater, Florida. Grace's sweet and gentle spirit will be missed by all her family and friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband Jim, grandson Gus, and eight brothers and sisters.
