Obituary

George D. James, Jr., 87, of Franklin, NC, passed away on Saturday, Sept.16, 2006 surrounded by friends and family.

Born in Congers, NY, he was the son of the late George D. James, Sr. and Ruth Francis Grant James. In addition he was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Downs. George graduated in 1941 from Syracuse University, College of Forestry with a B.S. in Forestry Management. He suddenly became a Flying Cadet at Randolph Field, TX Class of 42-C. Commissioned 2nd Lt. March 7, 1942. After graduating he married Marion Hope Williams, RN (Syracuse 1941) and soon left for 2 years in England flying Spitfires and Mustangs (P-51) on low altitude high speed reconnaissance missions-shot down only once. He was very involved in the invasion of Europe. He came back home before VE-Day to instruct West Point (US Military Academy) seniors in flying and as a test pilot. Retired with DFC, AM + several clusters. On release from active duty, he moved to Unadilla, NY and got a job buying timber, logs and lumber for three years. He then went back to school (Wharton School of Finance) and opened a life insurance office for selling, training, pension, estate planning and investments. His newsletters and columns usually ended with "And by George, that's that!" which resulted in his becoming known in certain camping circles the world over as "By George". He retired in 1984 and moved to Dowdle Mountain Road, Clark's Chapel in Franklin, and there lived happily ever after traveling in a 1968 Airstream (with a lifetime guarantee, which just ran out!) George was a member of Clark's Chapel United Methodist Church, member of Rotary International for over 50 years and member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion Hope Williams James; sons, Tom, Bob and George III all of Franklin and a daughter, Jennifer Taggart of Shippensburg, PA; ten grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Clark's Chapel United Methodist Church, C/O Jean Sutton, 1822 Clarks Chapel Road, Franklin, NC 28734 or The Salvation Army, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, VA 22314.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 22, at Clark's Chapel United Methodist Church. Rev. Al Beck will officiate.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
