Obituary

George E. Broughton of Franklin passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at Angel Medical Center. He was 86 years old.

George was born on July 1, 1921 in South Bend, IN. He lived for many years in Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana before moving to Franklin in 1980. He was married to the former Dorothy Roe of Petersburg, MI on June 15, 1946.

George served his country in World War II as a radio technician. His work there prepared him for work in the electronics industry. He worked for Magnavox and then Graham Electronics in Fort Wayne, IN. After moving to North Carolina he worked with the Older Americans program of the U.S. Forest Service, helping to maintain many of the local parks and rest areas.

George was a numismatist and maintained membership in the Old Fort Coin Club in Fort Wayne until his death. Another great interest was geology and the study of rocks and gems. George was also interested in Cherokee Indian history and the history of the mountains of North Carolina. He enjoyed following Atlanta Braves baseball, reading and writing.

George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; his son George Broughton of California; his son Bob Broughton and wife Georgia of Franklin; his daughter Merry Broughton of Franklin; his daughter Cheryl Broughton and husband Mickey Smith of Belton, Texas; his daughter Nancy Hoagland and husband Michael of Franklin; grandson Michael Hoagland of Franklin; granddaughter Amy Cook and husband Joey of Whittier; granddaughter Holly Averett and husband Michael of Franklin; granddaughter Coleen Weeks and husband Charles of Sylva; great-granddaughters Brooklyn Hoagland of Franklin, Korah Bumgarner of Whittier, Kelsey Averett of Franklin and Paisley Weeks of Sylva; and great-grandsons Ethan Averett of Franklin, Trevor Averett of Franklin and Tyreese Weeks of Sylva.

A memorial service was held at Macon Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 7:00 PM.
