Dorothy Cross Orser, 87, of Franklin, formerly of Sarasota, FL passed away July 14, 2007at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, NC.
She was born in Larchmont, NY to John and Irene Cross on November 6, 1919. She married Herbert E. Orser on December 6, 1941. He predeceased her in 1979. She was also predeceased by a brother, John Bodnar and a granddaughter Jacqueline Orser.
Mrs. Orser graduated from Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY. She worked in Manhattan during World War II for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. She raised her family in Millwood and later in Accord, NY. She was active in the ladies auxilary of the Millwood Fire Department. This little lady was one of the first women to drive a school bus in Westchester County, NY.
Following her husband's death, Mrs. Orser spent many hours in volunteer service in Sarasota. She drove cancer patients to their appointments for the American Cancer Society. She worked as a Pink Lady at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and served as president of that organization. She also volunteered with the Dept. of Health and Rehabilitative Services. Her work there was so outstanding that they offered her a paid position. She worked for them, full time, until she was 78 years old. She was proud that she bowled in a league until she was 80. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Sarasota where she was active in a circle and often had the responsibility of counting the offering after Sunday services.
Mrs. Orser is survived by her five children. Locally she lived with her daughter, Susan Korsgard (Chris) and their daughter, Melissa. Her other children are: Richard (Cacia) Orser of Franklin, Nancy Vandemark (Richard) of Accord, NY, Peter (Angie) Orser, and Donald Orser of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She will fondly be remembered for her cute sense of humor.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19 at Palms Funeral Home, Sarasota, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Angel Home Health and Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, NC 28734 or the American Cancer Society.
