ATLANTA, GEORGIA – Dennis Melvin Houston, 71, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Franklin, passed away unexpectedly April 26, 2018 surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Franklin, NC, he was the son of the late Chloe Parrish Houston and Raleigh Melvin Houston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother in law, Andrew "Andy" Parker Norton Jr. He is survived by his sister, Karen H. Norton; brother, Max C. Houston (Penny); niece, Alex H. Lewis (Austin); nephews, Carrington M. Houston, Andrew "Drew" P. Norton III (Jennifer), and Ryan J. Norton (Laurie); great niece, Cora Chloe Ann Norton; and many dear friends in Atlanta who he considered family.
Dennis graduated from Franklin High School ('64) and attended Brevard College and Georgia Southern, where he played baseball and basketball. While at Georgia Southern, he spent the summer working for Delta Airlines, leading to a 35-year career. In 1988, Dennis began working part time for Argus Event Staffing—a job he would continue after his retirement from Delta.
An avid sportsman, Dennis played on a Delta-, Miller-, and Coors-sponsored softball team, The Bucks, bringing home five Men's Major Industrial national championships. While he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and traveling, Dennis loved people. Whether cooking for the 337 Hunt Club and New Year's Day party or eating with the "WNDC" at Padriac's, Dennis believed life is better when you share laughs and help others.
Dennis volunteered for GOBeyond Charities, which provides toys and clothing to underprivileged Atlanta-area children at Christmastime and makes regular donations to Decatur Cooperative Ministry, Sheltering Grace Ministry, S.H.A.R.E. House, and the Shriners.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made at GOBeyondCharities.org.
Graveside services honoring Dennis will be held at Woodlawn cemetery in Franklin at a later date; a celebration of his life will be held in Atlanta at a later date.
Georgia Cremation Centers of Acworth, Georgia will be in charge of services.
