Bessie Gertrude Coggins Stiwinter Crawford, 91, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, May 04, 2011.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Alex Mongomery and Annie Bennett Coggins. She was married first to Roy Edison Stiwinter who died in 1985 and then to William G. Crawford who died in 1999. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Eldon and Everett Coggins; sister, Grace Rogers Knecht and Pearl Higdon; son in law, Howell Henry and grandson, Brandon Stiwinter. Bessie was best known for her Cullasaja news article in the Franklin Press. She was a greeter at Walmart for several years and active in the Cullasaja Community Club. She attended Pine Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter Geralene Henry, sons Lavaughn (Karen) Stiwinter and Dean Stiwinter all of Franklin; brother, Ellis (Janet) Coggins of Goodrich, MI; two sisters, Rose Rogers of Franklin and Stella Higdon of Highlands; stepson, William G. Crawford Jr. of Franklin; stepdaughter, Sue (Wesley) Hirsch of Franklin; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Tony Stiwinter, Chris Henry, Evan Henry, Ronnie Vinson, Bill Crawford and Teddy Higdon will serve as Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pine Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, C/O Shirley Stiles, 7454 Highlands Road, Franklin, NC 28734 or the Brandon Stiwinter Memorial Scholarship, C/O North Carolina Community Foundations, 4601 Six Forks Road, Suite 524, Raleigh, NC 27609 .
