Berton "Dwight" Beaman, 86, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Born in Gary, IN, he was the son of the late Clay Berton Beaman and Audrey Eleanor Boyd Beaman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather Sunshine Freeman. Dwight was an Electricians Mate Second Class with the US Navy and served during WWII. He was a Sergeant for the Hammond Indiana Police Department, where he worked for 20 years. He was a past Master of McKinley Lodge #712 in Hammond, IN and earned the Diamond Jubilee awarding 60 years membership; he was a lifetime member of Oasis Temple, member of the Junaluska Lodge where he served as past treasurer, was a 33rd Degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, Royal Arch Masons, Orak Shrine Temple and 60 year member of the Eastern Star. Dwight was past President of the Franklin Lions Club and received the Lion of the Year Award and the Melvin Jones Award. He was also past President of the Smoky Mountain Shrine Club. He was a very active member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School and was awarded Lay Leader of the Year. He was counselor of Methodist Youth Fellowship for five years in Hammond First Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bette Ann Beaman; two sons, Darrell Dwight Beaman and wife Kathleen of Monroe, NC and Vice Admiral Gerald Roger Beaman, USN (ret) and wife Yvonne of San Diego, CA; brother, Doran Eugene Beaman and wife Donna of Cheyenne, WY; four grandchildren, Richard Dwight Beaman, Merritte Marie Miszuk, Kylene Rae Nicolopoulos and Ryan Darrell Beaman.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 4, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108. Rev. Steve Miller will officiate. Interment will be in the Snow Hill UMC Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Members of Junaluska Masonic Lodge and Smoky Mountain Shrine Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
