Obituary
Alex Lee "A. L." Whitaker, Jr., 86, of Franklin, passed away Monday, May 28, 2007.
A native of Tazewell, VA, he was the son of the late Alex Lee Whitaker, Sr. and Dollie Pearl McCracken Whitaker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Cunningham Whitaker who died in July 1993, and two brothers and three sisters. Mr. Whitaker had lived in Macon County for fifty-five years, owning his own insurance business since January 1959. He was a US Army Veteran, serving in WWII. He previously served on the School Board, Board of Commissioners, Town Alderman and was a previous member of the Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Lynda W. Rothwell of Columbia, SC, and Elaine Moffitt of Franklin, NC; one sister-in-law, Faye Whitaker of Sylva, NC; seven grandchildren, Cory Davis and wife, Beth of Buford, GA, Wendy Rothwell of Columbia, SC, Melissa McDonald and husband, Joe of Columbia, SC, Shelley Pickens an husband, Jeremy of Buford, GA, Allison Rollings and husband, Jonathon of Knoxville, TN, Apryl Reese and husband, Blake and Josh Moffitt, all of Franklin, NC; nine great grandchildren, Bailey Stiwinter, Hawk Davis, Dylan and Cameron Stanton, Marcus and Dell Rothwell, Brandon McDonald, Jack Pickens, and Davis Lee Moffitt.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Windy Gap Baptist Church. Rev. Mark Bishop and Rev. Greg Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Macon Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Blake Allman, Steve Rogers, Ronnie Rhodes, Brian Terrell, Bobby Peek and John Fowler. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harley Potts, Bill Bennett, Branch Buchanan, Jerry Stamey, Randy Holland, Bruce Bryant and J. C. Jacobs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Windy Gap Baptist Church Building Fund, C/O Sandra Teem 51 Teem Trail, Franklin, NC 28734.
