Obituary

Albert W. "Al" Dilthey, 81, died Thursday, April 21, following a brief hospitalization at Angel Medical Center. He was born in New York on August 18, 1929 to the late Albert W. (Sr.) and Nancy T. Dilthey.
A graduate of Syracuse University, he received his MBA from Auburn University where he met his wife, Suzanne. Upon completion of the Navy's OCS in New London, CT, his active duty was spent in the submarine service.
Al enjoyed a long career in the human resources field, where he excelled in training, public speaking, and community relations. He was first employed by General Electric, and later served as an executive and director at the Miami Herald. He will be remembered there for his leadership positions with SHRM, the Chamber of Commerce, and for serving as emcee of the Miami Herald's Silver Knight Awards and Pops by the Bay concert series.
Residents of Otto for 38 years, the Diltheys moved to Macon County year-round in 1992. A lifelong athlete, Al enjoyed competitive tennis and running, placing first for his age group in the Ruby Run marathon in in1994. He participated in the Macon County Senior Games, was an active member of the Macon County Arts Council, and is best known locally for annually emceeing the Senior Follies and Folkmoot. Al also took great pride in his membership in the 'Old Bones' softball team. After retiring, Al expressed his creative side through photography, framing artwork, cooking, baking bread and cultivating his prized dahlias.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Suzanne Morgan Dilthey; two daughters, Susan Dilthey of Newnan, GA, and Nancy Dilthey of Wexford, PA, and a sister, Anne Dawley of Deptford, NJ and her two children.
A Celebration of Al's Life will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 70 Trimont View Dr., Franklin, at 11 o'clock on Saturday, April 30. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be made to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church's Music Fund or to the Macon County Humane Society, P.O. Box 81, Franklin NC 28744.
